A ram on its winter range, using windblown slopes for easier travel and grazing.
Winter is a tough time for sheep. They burn more energy than they are able to replenish, making them increasingly vulnerable as this season progresses.
The flehmen response is common among rams during the rut. They curl back their upper lips and inhale to detect pheromones given off by ewes in estrous. This is how they know when ewes are ready to mate.
